Tree Plantation workshop with HR College Mumbai
We conducted a super-fun Tree Plantation workshop, for Rotract club of HR College, Mumbai. Savita, an Adivasi woman farmer in the tribal hamlet of Mattaipada in Aarey Colony, was our host and beneficiary, and thanks to this experiential education event, a variety of fruiting trees of her choice have now found a home in her small-scale organic forest farm.
#RewildingAarey is our intersectional ecocultural project involving tribal livelihood-generating agroforestry, conservation education, Traditional Ecological Knowledge conservation and habitat protection in Mumbai’s one-of-its-kind urban forest. In our ‘Tree plantation workshops,’ we don’t just plant trees, we also create and plant tree planters.
Out of every few such workshops, even if one participant becomes a tree plantation organiser someday, it’s already an exponential effect.
During the workshop, Sanjiv Valsan Director initiated over 50 first-timer teenage college students into the practice and science of tree plantation and Post-plantation care. We also educated them on soil basics, how trees live in their natural environment, the importance of the right trees for each place, and the urgency of preserving and rewilding forests, especially since we have been experiencing a heatwave this year.
While we initiated young tree planters through such hands-on practical workshops, our host Ms. Savita also became the beneficiary of 25 fruiting trees, and at some point, she will get to harvest the fruits for both her livelihood and her family’s nutritional needs.
Yes, win-wins do exist between humans and nature!
